rec. February, December 2008 Große Musikvereinssaal, Vienna, Austria. DDD
DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 477 7455 [63:47]

Superstar tenor Plácido Domingo and soprano Violeta Urmana perform an interesting collection. The release comprises eight première commercial recordings of opera arias and ensembles that were subsequently revised or discarded, together with four rarely performed orchestral scores. Musicologist Michael Kaye author of ‘The Unknown Puccini’ (Oxford University Press, 1987) has been successful in uncovering a significant number of ‘lost’ Puccini music. Ten of the scores here are performed in Kaye editions whilst tracks 4 and 12 have been edited by Linda Fairtile. The notes to this Deutsche Grammophon release describe these scores as a ‘treasury’ of rediscovered Puccini. Rather than infer that these scores are revelatory or groundbreaking I prefer to describe them as fascinating unknown Puccini scores that are written in the composer’s familiar style and character.

Alberto Veronesi is somewhat a Puccini specialist having been music director of the celebrated Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago in Tuscany since 1999. The association between Deutsche Grammophon and maestro Veronesi commenced in 2006 with an acclaimed recording of the early Puccini opera Edgar with Plácido Domingo singing the title role. Here Veronesi conducts the soloists and the Wiener Staatsopernchor and Wiener Philharmoniker with assurance and commitment.

The orchestral scores commence with the fledgling Preludio a orchestra (1876) from the eighteen year old Puccini. Then there is the Adagetto per orchestra da camera (1881/83); the Act 1 Preludio from Edgar (1892 version) and the Preludio to the original Act III/1 of Manon Lascaux (1892). All the orchestral scores inhabit a similar sound-world; high on style and grace, light and sweet in character. In the Edgar and Manon Lascaux Preludes I noticed how Puccini smartly develops the emotional weight of the music in an ever so subtle manner.

Impressive is the Act 2 quartet Ed ora bevo all'amor (And now I drink to the love) from Puccini’s neglected masterpiece La rondine (The swallow) in the 1920 second version. In this version of the ensemble Puccini redistributes the music away from the chorus to the quartet of soloists. This is glorious singing by the quartet of Domingo in the baritone part, Urmana, Dell’Oste and Secco.

From the conclusion of original 1904 version of Madama Butterfly the aria Con onor muore (One dies with honour) Violeta Urmana wonderfully portrays Cio Cio San’s hauntingly moving suicide scene. I enjoyed the extended love duet Sia benedetto il giorno (Blessed be the day) from the 1889 manuscript version of Edgar. Domingo and Urmana, as the tragic lovers Edgar and Fidelia, perform a heart-rending duet that lifts the hairs on the back of the neck.

The aria Sola, perduta, abbandonata! (Alone, lost and forsaken) is presented here in its complete original version from the 1893 première of Manon Lescaut. In a magnificent portrayal soprano Urmana as the heroine Manon convincingly conveys raw swathes of emotion. Another highlight of the disc is from the 1920 version of La rondine the Act 1 entrance aria Parigi! È la città dei desideri (Paris! The city of desires). Here the assured Plácido Domingo as Ruggero is extolling the delights of Paris and of Magda his new love attraction.

Both the featured soloists soprano Violeta Urmana and superstar tenor Plácido Domingo have made waves in the music press for switching their voice ranges. Previously known as a dark-toned mezzo-soprano Violeta Urmana confidently made the transition to the role of a soprano back in 2002. Her control and vocal characterisation in these Puccini roles is commendable. Recently singing the baritone role of Simon Boccanegra, the Doge of Genoa, Plácido Domingo’s rich warm timbre is in fine condition and continues to thrill and entertain.

The sound quality is up to the high standards set by the famous yellow label and the two essays are interesting and informative. Full texts are provided with English translations which is good to see. For Puccini lovers this Deutsche Grammophon release featuring Plácido Domingo should prove to be a veritable treasure-chest of fascinating rarely heard scores.

Recording: Teatro de la Maestranza, Sevilla, 7 and 8 April 2006. Manuel del Pópolo

Garcia (Sevilla ,1775-Paris 1832), is, although he does not know, one of our greatest theatrical composers, renowned in his time as an excellent singer and performer of Rossini, great singing teacher, father of singers also Maria Malibran, Pauline Viardot and Manuel Garcia, a teacher, Laryngoscope inventor and propagator of the choir of his father who is still in force and is highly regarded in the professional field. Garcia, the father was an entrepreneur opera as such introduced the opera in New York and to top it off, wrote some 50 operas. Well, this character is still almost unknown to many English fans, although in recent years is rediscovering its shape. Thank goodness! Don Chisciotte
Comic opera in two acts, written in Italian, which is based on Cervantes' work but includes characters outside of the historical action novel. Was released, apparently in the Park Theatre, New York in 1827 and in 2005, celebrate the fourth centenary of Don Quixote has been recovered by the English conductor Juan de Udaeta who worked on the score of Music Library of the City of Madrid, an organization that holds a unique collection of quixotic scores of more than one hundred works. A curious detail of the score of this Don Quixote is on the cover appears as author "E. Garcia ", we must consider that the" E "stands for Emanuel.
The opera is a product of the time with obvious influences from Mozart and Rossini, although there are obvious moments of Hispanic origin as Dorotea's aria ("Nato mode), the sextet's second act (" Qual Ardir! ") Or as the end of the work. Despite the interest that we deserve this opera, was a colleague that she was extraordinarily demanding. I wish it were forever. It is true that the work is hard on the vocals, but we must not forget that it's written by a singer who was very demanding even with himself (his biography and his daughter Malibrán is full of details that attest). This Don Quixote
Manuel Garcia was released in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real), 12 November 2005, after overcoming serious difficulties that threatened its staging, with the support, late of the State Company for commemorations , Public Enterprise "Don Quijote de la Mancha 2005" and the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha. If the author has not been named Garcia, might have had more luck.
This CD was recorded live at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, 7 and 8 April 2006, led by Juan de Udaeta it was who opened the score in Tomelloso but with a different cast that of the occasion. The fact that the recording is "live" (wrong name we use as a result of direct translation from English "live recording", as if he had a recording that is not "live") assumes the existence of sounds that disfigure the listening at home (steps, changes in the "spatiality" of voices, the singers dark at some point ...) but has the merit to get away from perfection aseptic studio recordings, where sometimes there is more work sound engineers which would be acceptable. Attentive listening to these two CD's view, at some point, a orchestra that seems out of adjustment, although we are not able to determine whether it is because of some misalignment or the result of inadequate planning a recording technique. Don Chisciotte
requires a large cast, here served by a team of young singers who are facing their respective roles with varying results. Angel Rodriguez, tenor, plays a Don Quixote more dramatic than lyrical, finding something right in the acute sometime. Javier Galán, a baritone who gives life to Sancho, tremulous voice expresses something with enough technical mastery. José Julián Frontal, also baritone, has taken over the role of Fernando, his exposure the character is clearly and effectively with a command of written agility by Garcia. Jon Plazaola, tenor, is comfortable in the position of the character of Cardenio and shows his lyrical ring with ease and confidence. Cristina Obregon, soprano, takes over the character of Dorothy and solves with ease its interventions, especially the two arias that is the protagonist, although in some instances has given us the feeling of being a little uncomfortable. We especially liked the pairing of Aurelio Puente (playing the bachelor Perulino) and Tomeu Bibi (in the barber's Radipelo), both very well in individual and very conjoined when involved simultaneously.
The orchestra sounds good, except those "Mismatches" referred to and responds to the direction of Udaeta with diligence and effectiveness, highlighting the dynamic drawings and color the music. The Intermezzo Choir, correct in his not very numerous interventions.

Virgin Classics 724354570520 (CD) Natalie Dessay's vocal

crisis - she was operated on for nodes on her vocal cords three years ago - is clearly over. The voice has ripened somewhat, but do not worry, the incredible high notes are still present and easily produced, wonderfully, they now have a bit more body. Dessay is a great singer/interpreter, taking little for granted and obviously not satisfied only with coloratura fireworks. Zerbinetta is one of her signature roles, and she knows this complex, winning gal well. She can be cajoling, sarcastic, witty, and sincere--and the way she tosses off high Cs, Ds, and more, with impeccable staccatos and trills, seems as natural as speech. She works the same type of magic with "Amor", the last of the Brentano Lieder recorded here. The song not only contains a vocal imitation of flame but involves a fascination with Cupid, who is oft-described here as "wily" ("schlaues"), a word Dessay emphasizes differently each time she sings it. The other three Brentano songs are by turns gentle, rapturous, and filled with longing.
In the extended scene from Ariadne, Dessay is convincing and conversational with Sophie Koch (Composer), who delivers her aria with passion and seems to lack only a bottom note or two to fill the role ideally. In the Act 1 Arabella/Zdenka duet she is girlish and loving of her big sister, with just an imperfect, soft high note to vaguely mar the achievement, and Arabella is unaffectedly sung here by Felicity Lott. The two genuinely sound fond of one another.

But the pièces de résistance on this CD are the highlights from Rosenkavalier--the Presentation of the Silver Rose and final trio and duet. Here we strike gold (or silver). Dessay sounds youthful and pure in the Presentation and sings with the most lovely legato and tone at the opera's end. She's abetted by Angelika Kirchschlager as Octavian, who is simply perfect, and Felicity Lott, also smooth as silk as the Marschallin. The performances are so good that it's easy to forget that we're only hearing excerpts. Thomas Allen is the Faninal and, in Ariadne, the Music Master, and frankly he sounds younger and better than he has in a while. Antonio Pappano is becoming an all-purpose, great opera conductor, and the Covent Garden orchestra is polished and elegant. The sound is rich and full. This CD is a gem.

Kicking off A&M's ambitious Cat Stevens reissue program is this 20-song introduction. The set surveys all of Stevens's stages, from the orchestrated late-1960s sides through his early-'70s peak to his more eclectic late-1970s experiments. Following the progression makes for an interesting endeavor as Stevens learns to harness his ambitious ideas with arrangements that don't obscure his rhapsodic messages. Few artists of his generation were more gifted when it came to plucking timeless melodies out of thin air, and his sumptuous voice was always able to movingly convey his bittersweet lyrics. As a career overview (including one previously unreleased cut) this set achieves its goal, hitting all of the chart successes along the way and basically defining his role as a sensitive '70s singer-songwriter, but some fans may opt for the classic early-'70s studio records, which find Stevens at his most consistently touching.
